Brooksby’s Walk Toilets

The public toilets on Brookby’s Walk (adjacent to Sol’s bike shop at No. 1 Chatsworth Road) have lain empty for close to two decades.  Hackney Council recently submitted a planning application to demolish the toilets and build retail units and flats on the site. The Society has opposed the Council’s plans, collecting hundreds of signatures on our petition, and online here. We submitted a suite of strong objections to the planning application, and enlisted the support of our local councillors and MP.

There are plenty of unused shops all along Chatsworth Road, and what is really needed for continued growth of Chatsworth’s markets, is working, well-maintained public toilets, operated and looked after by committed locals according to a sustainable plan.

UPDATE FEB 2013: We have obtained a lease from the Council and now have possession of the toilets. WHOOP WHOOP.

We plan to open the toilets during market hours and at any time we have something going on in the gents… We will be applying for change of use and a premises licence. Click here for latest info.

So if you have ideas for art shows, pop-up cafes or anything else, please contact us.

We’ll also need help with painting, joinery, plumbing and electrics to get the toilets fully restored.
